About the Library

New Castle Public Library began as a subscription library in 1812. In 1965, it moved from its location on 3rd Street (now a museum) to its current location on Delaware Street. The building reopened in 2010 after renovations and expansion were completed to meet the community’s growing needs. More information on the history of New Castle Public Library can be found here.

The enthusiastic New Castle Library Friends support the library, who plan fundraisers and various book sales throughout the year.

New Castle Public Library is a contract library within the New Castle County Public Library System. We have a governing board, and the Trustees of New Castle Commons own and maintain the library building.
